How to make a simple Lebanese Breakfast
My grandfather is Lebanese and since both he and my mom are great cooks I always grew up with delicious Lebanese food. Sadly, I am terrible at cooking, but one thing I love making is a simple Lebanese breakfast. This meal is very easy (as there is not very much actual cooking) and always tasty! I'll also include some words in Arabic since I am trying to learn myself (if you read Arabic I will not have the proper diacritics since I don't know them haha)!
Step 1: Cut your Vegetables and Prep your Plate
- Cut up a tomato or banadoura (بندورة) and cucumber or khyaar (خيار) into small pieces and put them on a plate.
- In the middle of the place place a little bit of lebneh (لبنة).
- Lebneh is a type of cheese made from strained yogurt and you can easily find it at an Arab market such as the Jordan Market or Bolmart Mediterranean Market.
- On top of the lebneh put a little bit of olive oil or zayt zaytoun (زيت زيتون) and I like to add some mint or na3na3 (نعنع) as well if I have it.
- Add some olives or zaytoun (زيتون) on the plate as well and then you can focus on prepping your other ingredients.
Step 2: Prep your Mana’eesh (مناقيش)
- Mana'eesh is a type of flatbread found in many Levantine countries. Although it can be topped with many things, I always top it with za'atar (زعتر), a spice mixture, and olive oil.
- Since I am not good at baking I normally make my mana’eesh using pita bread.
- First, mix your za'atar and olive oil until it is a spreadable consistency.
- Then place it on your pita bread and toast the pita.
Step 3: Cook your Egg
- You can cook your eggs or bayd (بيد) however you like; I tend to scramble my eggs because it is easier.
- If you know how to make lamb confit or awarma, which is meat preserved in lamb fat, you can definitely add this to your eggs as well!
Step 4: Enjoy! Sahtén (صحتين)
- Now put everything you've made together and enjoy your easy, but delicious Lebanese breakfast!
- I would also encourage you to try other Lebanese dishes and explore some of the amazing Arab restaurants that we have here in LA!
Hey Chloe, I did know you were part Lebanese, also I love Mana’eesh. Being vegetarian there aren't a ton of options, but my favorite is a cheese and Zaatar Mana’eesh!
